in academic libraries, there are five main forms and five main types of library cataloguing.
TYPES OF LIBRARY CATALOGUE
This describes the method used in cataloguing the materials in a library. This includes: Title cataloguing, author cataloguing, subject cataloguing, dictionary cataloguing and classified/systematic cataloguing.
i) Title catalogue- here the materials are catalogued alphabetically basing on the main title of the material. it becomes hard to gather books by the same author but very easy to have a collection of related materials for they maybe using almost a similar topic
ii) Subject catalogue- this is when the cataloguing is done basing on the main subject areas of the information a material contains. It makes it easy also to get books on a certain subject and a collection of materials related with the subject area.
iii) Author catalogue- this system uses the surname of the authors as the main entry in cataloguing the materials. If a user is interested in materials authored by a certain person, then it becomes so easy for him/her o make the collection, but a cons comes in whereby an author is interested in many subject areas. It makes it hard to have a related collection of materials.
iv) Dictionary catalogue- here the cataloguing involves all the entries in an alphabetical order, it is not necessarily basing on a specific entry point but on their alphabetical order.
v) Classified catalogue- Here the cataloguing is done based on the classification scheme in use, hence the name classified. If the classification scheme is DDC, the same order of entry of materials in the entry book, is the same as the catalogue provided by the academic library.

FORMS OF LIBRARY CATALOGUES
This describes where, or on what material will the catalogue be found, the nature, the phisical presentation of the catalogue matters here. they include: Sheaf catalogues, Computer catalogues, Book bound catalogues, microfiche catalogues and card catalogues.
i) Card catalogue- here the cataloguing is done on cards which are held on card trays in the academic library. The cards contain s the main entries and additional data that will help the user locate his materials easily.
ii) Computer catalogue- Here, cataloguing is done on papers with computer like characters containing the main entry of materials and additional data that will help the user to easily locate he materials he is searching for.
iii) sheaf catalogue- here cataloguing is done on sheafs or rather some small papers which are attached together containing the main entry and any other data that will help the user locate his materials easily.
iv) Bound book- here, cataloguing is done on peaces of papers which are then bound together in a book. This does not allow addition of materials in the catalogue.
v) Micro-fiche- here cataloguing is done in that, a catalogue is taken a picture and the picture transfered into microfiches, the data is only read using a microfiche reader.

-NOTE THAT: The main entry as mentioned in the forms of catalogue, depends on the type of catalogue in use.
