The theme of education runs through the short story. Mjdy started schooling in Khartoum where it is said that he was the best student in the whole country. His mother keeps the newspaper with which Majdy's photo appears. It was taken when he emerged the best secondary student in the whole country. He proceeds to London where he gets PHD.

The society has put a lot of emphasis in education and this is well illustrated when Majdy passes his secondary examination. The whole family rejoice ,the sister throw him a party, the father slaughter a sheep and share it with the beggars who sit near the mosque and his mother burns incense in prayers for her son's protection.

When Majdy fails his qualifying exam,it affects him so much that he feels like giving up altogether. He even cries. His mother tells him to continue and she finds him a wife so that he stops being lonely and study.
