A number of factor influenced the coming and finally settlement of the Arabs at the East African coast before 1500AD. The main reason was the lucrative Indian Ocean Trade on the coast. They were particularly interested in trade items like gold, copper, ivory, animal skin and slaves that could be got from there. Their coming also led to the introduction of new forms of currency like cowrie shells. Slave trade led to a lot of insecurities not only to the coast but also in the interior of East Africa. Guns and other forms of weaponry like daggers and swords were introduced to help in the acquisition of these slaves and defense. They also encouraged the minting and use of coins to facilitate trade, this replaced the old system of barter trade. New commodities were introduced e.g cloth, beads, glassware, porcelain, jars, swords-etc...........
