Satire is the use of hum our to criticize or attack a person,an idea or an habit that is not pleasing or good or else seen to be bad.It is also used to expose foolishness and corruption in a particular society.The aim of using satire is improve the nature of humanity by criticizing the bad ideas in human beings.
Mulili, the illiterate government official,is not only inefficient and irresponsible but also hypocritical.He is very poor in diction.It is hypocritical that such an ignorant person in the society has risen up to the level of a soldier.His insensitivity to fellow human beings is criticized. Jere asks him "How could you possibly talk like that to those two poor creatures?"He replies ,..."You want me to sing to them?"His Humanity makes Jere appeal to him."Mulili if you still have even the smallest part of your original human heart,Let us allow these people to carry on with their ceremony.His hypocritical nature is scathed. His main reason is to stop Adika's parents to carry on with the shaving ceremony,so that he can get what Boss had promised him -many acres of land and grade cattle.
The nepotistic nature of the political government institutions is condemned.The head of state is no exception,he is inefficient,irresponsible and nepotistic as Mulili. He puts Mulili in police force for selfish motives.He
brings down the Economy of Kafira by Stealing from it and hiding money in foreign banks.He puts Mulili in his position not because he is learned but his cousin.
Mulili's evil nature is criticized. He will not stop at anything in order to acquire material wealth.He organizes for the murder of Kabito through a planned road accident simply because they fell out during the committee meeting.We laugh at the mode of his speaking and language as he tells Boss all manner of lies to ensure that Kabito faces the consequences of talking badly to him.He tells Boss,"He painted your name in blood in front of the whole committee,he come to the meeting full of alcoholism".Later at the end of the play we laugh at Mulili as he betrays Boss,"....he is only a distance cousin....kill him"
Boss's behavior is also criticized when he tried to rape Regina.Regina escaped by jumping out of the ten foot wall.To make matters worse,he locks up MercedeS his wife when she tries to question his behavior. We also laugh at his irresponsible behavior in organizing a play for the visiting head of state instead of auditioning qualified people,he gives Jusper,a university student the mandate of
writing the script so that he could get something out of it,through this he embezzles funds.He involves the prisoners to act the play and he knows that this could bring danger to him and to other people.
In a nutshell satire has been used to criticize the bad acts of some of the leaders of Kafira society as we have seen in the above illustrations.
