Why are the caps of the cell of a lead acid accumulator opened when charging the battery?

During charging, oxidation and reduction takes place at the anode and cathode and one of the product resulting from these processes is hydrogen gas. The caps are therefore opened to allow the hydrogen gas escape effectively to the atmosphere. Failure to do so may cause pressure build up in the battery resulting to explosion.
