The Democratic Party of kenya was founded in 1991 by John keen and Mwai kibaki after the section 2A of the constitution was repealed.
The party then became a partner in the National Rainbow Coalition which won 125 out of 210 elected seats of which 36 were taken by the democratic party.
Mwai kibaki was supported by the party and won the presidential elections of 2002.
Mwai Kibaki became the founder leader of the party and Joseph.K.munyau as the party chairman.
The headquarter of the party was at Gitanga road, Lavington Nairobi. Its main ideology of formation was "conservation" and the slogan used by the party was "unity and peace".
In 2007 the democratic party became part of PNU led by president Mwai kibaki. One of its members Wilfred Machage was named a cabinet minister in the grand coalition government.
