Strategic location: the center location on the Nile delta was attractive for the Arabs who sought to dominate the Nile valley. From Cairo, they were able to launch expeditions upstream as well as receive reinforcements from Arabia
Labor peasants: the peasants paid taxes in form of labor and so they were used in the expansion of Cairo as a city. Slaves obtained from the Trans-Saharan trade also provided labor
Trade: Cairo served as a junction on all trade routes and an important station on the pilgrims’ journey to Mecca and Medina
Harbor: the location of Cairo on the Nile enabled it to serve as a harbor on the way that linked Upper Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea
