Trade: Kilwa participated in the Indian Ocean trade and became wealthy as a result. The sultan obtained tax on all commodities that were traded in the territory as well as exporting porcelain, pottery, beads and fabric produced.
Islam: most of the people were Muslims therefore religion was used by the rulers to unify the people especially in terms of war.
Gold: Kilwa obtained gold from Sofala which was one of the major commodities of the Indian Ocean trade
Able leadership: the Shirazi leaders founded a dynasty which provided able leadership. They managed to keep off enemies and convince the vassals to pay the tribute
Location: the island is strategically placed for the Indian Ocean trade and secure to the attacks
