Trade and commerce: since Athens is located on a rocky area, the soils cannot support agriculture to support the Athenian population. They traded in order to obtain food which they exchanged for the goods they produced.
Security: the city is located on a hilly and mountainous region and surrounded by water making external invasion difficult
Culture: it was acclaimed as the home of drama. It had several theaters where comedies, tragedies were staged by playwrights
Education: sons of the Athenians were send to teachers who taught them to think critically and respond to problems in astronomy, arithmetic, medicine and philosophy. The city is known for its philosophers and scientists such as Socrates, Plato, Aristotle and Pythagoras. These people drew many young men to Athens in search of knowledge. This led to the foundation of National Copodistrian University in 1337
The presence of the Parthenon, the temple of the goddess Athena and other temples dedicated to gods such as Zeus, Poseidon and Dionysus drew worshipers and pilgrims from all over the world
