- Must have a moderator to guide/ control discussion

- Should have 6 - 8 members. Should not have very few members because ideas will be scarce/ too many members may not be manageable

- Recording; discussion should recorded/ written for future reference

- Equal chance of contribution; all members should have equal opportunities to contribute to give room for varied perspective.

- Questioning should be open-ended/ factual. This gives room for more information to be generated.

- Impartial moderation; facilitator should not give sign of approval/ disapproval of participants responses.

- Homogeneity of the group members; should have members sharing ideas/ age/ education
