John Stuart Mill is considered the most influential English speaking philosopher of the nineteenth century. Mill was proponent of utilitarianism and his conceptions of liberty justified the liberty of an individual as opposed to limited state and social control where he addressed the nature and the limits of the power that can be legitimately exercised by the society or an individual. Mill passionately defended free speech regarding that free discourse is a necessary condition for intellectual and social progress but we can never be sure that a sized opinion does not contain some element of truth. Mill argued that allowing people to air false opinion is productive for two reasons. First individuals are more likely to abandon erroneous beliefs if they are engaged in an open exchange of ideas and second by forcing individuals to reexamine beliefs in the process of defense, these beliefs are kept from declining to mere dogma.
