iii. Polysaccharides

i) Sugars
- Soluble in water giving clear solutions
- They are sweet with varying levels of sweetness i.e fructose-sucrose-glucose-lactose
- They are readily absorbed by the body when consumed
ii) Oligo saccharides
- Oligo means few and saccharides means sugars
- They are slowly digested through action of bacteria resulting in production of gas in the stomach condition called flatulence.
iii) Polysaccharides
- They are made up of long chains of sugar units eg starch, cellulose, glycogen and pectin
- Pectin and cellulose contribute in the production of roughage and they are generally energy giving foods
