Gradient is the shape of the underlying crust in which a river passes. On steep gradients the river erosion is high because the water is flowing at greater speeds hence wearing out river rocks. On gentle gradients there is less erosion because the water is flowing at lower speeds and hence the erosive powers are low..... Hence there is less erosion. On moderate gradients we have medium erosion..

Velocity is distance per time in which river water flows... At high velocities we have high erosive power of river beds and sides while where we have lower velocities we have less river erosion because the water is flowing at less speed and thus not wearing out surfaces
