- Grusha saves Michael when he is abandoned at the palace. She refuses to flee on the ox-cart and later escapes with the baby.

- Grusha sacrifices her own money to buy milk for Michael. She even tries to suckle him, but her breast has no milk.

- Grusha also treks for a long distance carrying baby Michael on her back. At one point she leaves Michael on the threshold of a peasant woman’s house where she felt the baby would get milk.

- Grusha also perseveres mistreatment in her brother’s house for the sake of Michael. When she arrives she is not well received by Aniko but perseveres for the sake of the baby.

- Grusha agrees to marry Jussup, a ‘dying’ man so that Michael can have a roof over his head and a ‘father’. She thus risks her engagement to Simon.

- At the court Grusha fights fiercely to keep Michael. She does not even listen to the cook who is asking her to hand over the baby to its mother.
