Determination is the key to overcome obstacles in life.
I. Resian –she is determined to go to the university to achieve this, she goes against Nasilian culture that dictate how women should live.She also fights Olarinkoi when he attempts to rape her. She confronts her father OleKaelo when he intends to marry her off to Oloisoduri. Determination enables her to reach at Minik’s ranch and Minik gives her an opportunity to join the university.
II. Minik –she is determined to fight against the outdated cultural practices of the people of Nasila, she is educated which is not a norm for a girl child in Nasila She owns a ranch She is against the barbaric F.G.M and early marriages.
She earns the hatred of the elders in Nasila they refer to her as a wasp. Ole Musanka even curses her during the welcoming ceremony of kaelo. Minik with her determination is able to save over 500 girls and offers them a chance to go to school.
III. Nabaru this is the nurse who is entrusted to take care of Resian at Olarinkoi’s mother’s place. She is determined to save Resian from Olarinkoi and his mother who had planned to circumcise her and marry her off to her son.she organizes for transport to come fetch Resian from Olarinkoi’s place. Nabaru succeds at saving Resian to go to the ranch of Minik and helps her escape the evil plans of Olarinkoi and his mother.
IV. Taiyo –she is determined to go to Mombasa for a music extravaganza and therefore asks her father permission, who is harsh and strict.She overcomes fear and approaches her father which is hard having been raised at Kaelo’s family.
