Helmer. You can’t deny it, my dear little Nora. (Puts his arm round her waist.) It’s a sweet little spendthrift, but she uses up a deal of money. One would hardly believe how expensive such little persons are!
Nora. It’s a shame to say that. I do really save all I can.
Helmer (laughing). That’s very true,–all you can. But you can’t save anything!
Nora (smiling quietly and happily). You haven’t any idea how many expenses we skylarks and squirrels have, Torvald.
Helmer. You are an odd little soul. Very likeyour father. You always find some new way of wheedling money out of me, and, as soon as you have got it, it seems to melt in your hands. You never know where it has gone. Still, one must take you as you are. It is in the blood; for indeed it is true that you can inherit these things, Nora.
Nora. Ah, I wish I had inherited many of papa’s qualities.
Helmer. And I would not wish you to be anything but just what you are, my sweet little skylark. But, do you know, it strikes me that you are looking rather–what shall I say–rather uneasy today?
Nora. Do I?
Helmer. You do, really. Look straight at me.
Nora (looks at him). Well?
Helmer (wagging his finger at her). Hasn’t Miss Sweet Tooth been breaking rules in town today?
Nora. No; what makes you think that?
Helmer. Hasn’t she paid a visit to the confectioner’s?
Helmer. Not been nibbling sweets?
Nora. No, certainly not.
Helmer. Not even taken a bite at a macaroon ortwo?
Nora. No, Torvald, I assure you really–
Helmer. There, there, of course I was only joking.
Nora (going to the table on the right). I should notthink of going against your wishes.
Helmer. No, I am sure of that; besides, yougave me your word– (Going up to her.) Keepyour little Christmas secrets to yourself, mydarling. They will all be revealed tonight whenthe Christmas Tree is lit, no doubt.
Nora. Did you remember to invite Doctor Rank?

(b) 'Helmer refers to Nora as a sweet little spendthrift who is expensive.' Agree with him by drawing your three supportive illustrations from what happens earlier and later in the play.

Read the excerpt below and then answer questions that follow.
After a hurriedly prepared dinner, the girls retired to their bedroom to arrange and tidy it up. Cartons of their clothes, bedding, books and other personal effects were still piled up on their unmade bed. Curtains were yet to be hung as were their pictures and decorations.
Taiyo removed her cardigan and immediately swung into action. She loosened the ropes that tied cartons, emptied their contents onto the floor and sorted them. After some time, the large room that held their big bed was in shambles. Shoes lay strewn all over, books were stacked in heaps on the floor and clothes and bedding were scattered on the bed. Exhausted, she straightened up and stood, hands on her hips, eyeing in growing exasperation her sister who sat on a chair at one corner of the room reading a book.
"Surely, Resian," she complained to her sharply. "Is this the time to read a book with all this mess around
us?"
"Do your bit now and I will do mine tomorrow," Resian replied with a nonchalant carelessness. "I insist
that you get up right now and get to work" Taiyo raised her voice. "We need to arrange this room before we get to bed." Resian grunted. She reluctantly laid the book down and went to work.
They reviewed the events of the last two days as they tried to bring order to the room.
'There is such a contrast between Nakuru and this place," said Taiyo quietly. "It is so quiet and tranquil
here.'
'I don't know, but I feel an oppressive silence,' Resian said defiantly. 'A little noise is not all that 'Don't befuddle me with your weird kind of reasoning," said Taiyo getting impatient. "Do you prefer the Nakuru bus stage to this serene atmosphere?'
'No, not at all.' Resian said seriously. 'I would rather live in the most noisy place on earth, than live anywhere near a vagabond who would accost me in the most quiet and serene atmosphere with the intention of mutilating my sexuality!'
'Of course I also don't care whether I am counted among intoiye nemengalana,' an embarrassed Taiyo said
as she began to fold clothes, not looking at her sister.
'What I know is that my body belongs to me. I belong to myself." She picked a pillow, tossed it onto the bed, plumbed it up and looking around said fiercely, 'only when I am dead would anybody mutilate my body.'
'Don't you think they can force us to undergo the ritual?" Resian asked fearfully. 'What do you think will
happen to us if Papaai is forced by his clansmen to embrace the archaic culture that would require us to get
the cut?
"Resian-e-yeiyo, I hope nothing of that sort happens, for if it does ... ' she shrugged her shoulders
and pulled an expressive face. "I don't know what would happen to us.'
'That's why it's imperative that you persuade Papaai to allow us go back to Nakuru and enroll at the
university,' said Resian vehemently as she threw herself onto the bed, her arms behind her head. 'We must beat them to it. We must convince him to let us go before they prevail upon him to embrace outdated and archaic traditions.'
(a) '…..the girls retired to their bedroom to arrange and tidy it up.' Highlight the events that occur before this

The career market is full of opportunities. Gone are the days when we had ‘either… or’ career choices.
(Solved)
Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow
Choosing a career
The career market is full of opportunities. Gone are the days when we had ‘either… or’ career choices. The times when women, for example, chose between only nursing, teaching and secretarial work are long gone. The explosion in communication technology, and the liberalization and globalization of the world economy, has ensured that there is no longer a dearth of career choices. Today, colleges and Universities offer a wide range of training opportunities to high school graduates. This has made choosing a career an involving process. It has also given rise to the need for career counselling.
When choosing a career, whether you have the help of a career counselor or not, there are several factors that you should consider. These include your abilities or talents, your interests, your priorities and the available opportunities in the job market.
The skills required in a particular career and the ability to gain them through education must be considered when choosing careers. Becoming a doctor, for instance, requires extensive education and training, and many years of educational commitment. In addition to the compulsory subjects, the academic background required for this career is good grades in chemistry and biology at secondary school level. If your ability in these subjects is just average, you would be overstretching your luck to enroll for a Bachelor of Medicine degree course. In the past, students have chosen to pursue training in engineering, even when their ability to handle physics and mathematics was low. This, in many cases, has made them drop out of the class mid-course. The waste of time and resources would have been avoided if they had considered a career that did not require the ability to handle mathematics and physics well.
There are times when people have been driven to choose a particular career because of the salary and prestige associated with jobs in this field. At times, the desire to take certain courses comes from within the individual, but most times, individuals feel pressured by peers or family to take certain courses. Joining a career in which you have no interest in is a recipe for all dull life since you will spend more of your working hours doing something you do not like. Your career does not necessarily have to be your passion, but it should not bore you to death either. You can work out your interests by identifying the subjects you enjoy most at school, or the topics that are of interest to you and for which you take the initiative to read on your own.
It is true that many young people are attracted more by the social mobility that the job might provide than by their interest in the career. However, research has found that money does not play as big a role in job satisfaction as many people think. Of course we all have to make a living, but if you do not like your job, it does not matter how much you get paid to do it. What does matter is how well a career choice matches your values.
Questions
i) What has created the necessity for career counselling?
ii) Why is one’s ability an important factor in career choice?
iii) Why do you think the writer cites engineering in the passage?
iv) According to the passage which career should a person who values variety choose?
v) Make notes on the importance of knowing the availability of jobs in the career field one wants to join.
vi) What evidence is given in the passage to support the statement “Money does not play a big role in job satisfaction?”
vii) Explain the meaning of the following words as used in the passage.
a) Liberalization
b) Dearth
c) Social mobility
d) Collaboration

(Solved)
Along time ago there was old man whose name was Ramogi. This old man had two sons. These two sons called Labon’go and Gipir had wives. Labon’go was the elder of these two. When Ramogi died, Labon’go became the chief of the homestead. He was to look after his father’s property, including the family’s sacred spear.
There was a lot of forest land and elephants were in plenty. The elephants used to come and destroy crops. One day, when Labon’go was out hunting, an elephant came near the homestead and destroyed some of the crops. Gipir, who was still at home, was so furious that he quickly, without thinking, picked up the family spear and threw it at the elephant. The spear stuck into the elephant’s side and the elephantescape. The elephant ran with the spear until it reached the forest. When Labon’go came back from hunting ,his wife told him about the loss of his spear. She explained to him how an elephant had damaged the crops and how Gipir had bravely driven it away losing the sacred spear in the process. On hearing this Labong’o angrily went straight to his brother’s house and and demanded the spear , saying, Gipir, see that you return the family sacred spear and make sure it is that particular one that you threw at the elephant”Gipir tried to appease his brother by making beautiful spear but Labon’go refused to accept them.
One day Gipir told his wife, “ Please prepare for me a lot of food. I have a long journey to make.” The wife prepared for him a lot of food and Labon’go set out. After a long, dangerous journey, in which his life was threatened by wild animals and huge poisonous snakes, he reached a forest called gondliech, the home of elephants. In the forest he met an old woman. This old woman asked him, “What have you come to do here in the forest?”.Gipir told her what had happened. He told her how he had pierced an elephant with the sacred family spear, and that the elephant had run with it into the forest.
The woman became angry and said “so it is you who is killing my elephants?” Gipir replied politely and said that all the he wanted was the sacred spear of the family , if she could kindly help him to find it. The old woman then showed him where she kept spears. He searched among them and found the spear that Labon’go wanted. The old woman then gaveGipirsome beads to take to his wife.
When Gipir reached home he immediately took the spear to Labon’go. Labon’go was very happy and he thanked him.
Next morning Gipir spread out the beads he had been given by the old woman, in preparation for his wife to string them. Everyone in the homestead came out to see the beautiful beads .Labon’go’s child was playing where the beads were being strung. Without being noticed, he took one and swallowed it. Gipir knew that his time for revenge had come. until the child excreted. The excrement was searched thoroughly, but no bead was found . This action was repeated several days of trying and failing. Labon’go asked Gipir to cut the child open and take his bead. Gipir realized that this was a trap and he refused. He knew that if he killed the child and took out the bead Labon’go would certainly say that he wanted Gipir’s child.
Meanwhile Labon’go grew tied of the continual reminder from Gipir that he wanted his bead back, just as the demand for the sacred spear had tired Gipir.
When Labon’go killed and cut up the child, the bead was found hidden in the linings of the stomach. The child was buried. When this happened Gipir was forced to shift from his homestead to another land.
Labon’go also moved and they never saw one another again.
“I hope I grew and attain the height of the tree at my uncle’s place.
