The justification of this observation can be found in the following cases:
The Fat Prince and other princes are said to have plotted to overthrow the government of the Grand Duke and the Governor.Their intentions have nothing to do with the welfare of the people.Instead,we hear the peasants complain that their live shave been made more miserable by the soldiers who are doing the bidding of the princes .One of the first things that the Fat prince does is to attempt to appoint his nephew as judge so as to secure his power and influence .The princes are known to have contributed to Grusinia's loss in the war because they misappropriated the money that was meant for the war effort. They also sent either sick horses or nothing at all.
The governor is driven by greed for power, influence and material comfort. This he displays quite openly by the way he treats his subjects who pay so much tax to fund his personal comfort. He feels proud to have soldiers at his neck to keep beggars and petitioners out of his way.He does everything possible to make son so happy and healthy at the expense of the poor people whose slum dwellings he intends to raze down to give way for a garden for the boy.It is this overbearing lifestyle that makes the prince go for his head.
Natella Abashwili is on character whose whole life seems to hang on material things. After the overthrow and the brutal killing of the Governor, her husband, she displays a very shame full appetite for material things. We sense no human feeling in her ,no sense of loss for her husband. When told to prepare to flee the city to a safe place ,her mind goes to what clothes she will take with her rather than safety of her baby son.She even objects to the suggestion that she will ride a horse instead of being taken in a carriage ,because that is less dignified.Indeed, when she finally leaves the palace she does so without Michael, the poor baby having been forgotten. And ,when she comes after Michael at the end of the war,her intentions are made clear by one of her lawyers that without Michael she is completely locked out of her late husbands estate, and therefore ,the comfort and prestige that goes with it .Love has nothing to do with it.
