Maslow's hierarchy of needs states that we must satisfy each need in turn starting with the most obvious needs for survival. when the physical and emotional needs are satisfied, we can now get concerned with higher order needs of self-actualization.

Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory can also be applied in classroom.

Before a student's cognitive needs can be met, they must first fulfill their basic physiological needs. For example, a tired and hungry student will find it difficult to focus on learning.

Learner's need to feel emotionally and physically safe within the classroom is essential for them to reach their full potential. For example, a learner cannot be jovial in class yet they have family conflicts at home.

Learner's self-esteem can only be achieved if a learner feels that he/she belongs to a give peer group and that his /her opinion counts in group or class discussion activities.

Maslow suggests that students must be showed that they are valued and respected in the classroom. The teacher should therefore create a supportive environment.
