Similarities

Both meiosis and mitosis are types of cell division. Hence, in their processes, they share similar steps. Though meiosis typically adds more division and an extra step, responsible for mixing the genetic material from the parent cells, both have to produce copies of DNA. In the process, it pulls the two sets apart and puts them on one another. After that, it separates the center. Besides, both meiosis and mitosis, based on the parent cells' genes, produce fresh and new cells.

Differences

Meiosis involves the two-cycle separation of the parent cell, consequently leading to four daughter cells' production. Simultaneously, the chromosomes divide, producing four daughter cells with similar characteristics to the parent or one another. On the other hand, mitosis involves the division of the parent cell, leading to the production of two daughter cells similar to one another and the parent.

Moreover, while mitosis results in the production of germ cells, which are crucial to sexual reproduction, meiosis does not need sex for the process of creating new organisms. Hence, it is considered as sexual reproduction.
