a) Perceiving emotions - the ability to detect and decipher emotions in faces, pictures, voices, and cultural artifacts-including the ability to identify one's own emotions. When we perceive the emotions in other people's faces we can respond intelligently to their experiences consequently establishing a healthy emotional bond. Inability to perceive other people's emotions will make us respond unintelligently towards them. This ruins interpersonal relationships and kills teamwork.
b) Using emotions - the ability to harness (imprison) emotions to facilitate various cognitive activities, such as thinking and problem-solving. The emotionally intelligent person can capitalize fully upon his or her changing moods in order to best fit the task at hand. Less emotionally intelligent people let emotions crowd their judgments and fail to channel specific emotions towards the achievement of the relevant tasks.
c) Understanding emotions - the ability to comprehend emotion language and to appreciate complicated relationships among emotions. To be sensitive to variations among emotions and to recognize and describe how emotions evolve over time.
d) Managing emotions - the ability to regulate emotions in both ourselves and in others. To heighten or bring down emotions to acceptable levels according to the context.
