i. Business----Businesses shape the perceptions of the public in order to get the desired behaviour and purchase patterns from consumers. This is done through advertisements where billions of shillings are spend annually in this exercise. Advertising is part of consumer psychology and it influences to consumer opinions in a positive light.
ii. Leadership---An individual can use perception management as a way to positively enhance his/her leadership abilities. A person's ability to manage perceptions is what sets great leaders apart. What people, your followers, appraise as your effectiveness and ability as a leader becomes their perception, which then becomes reality. Unmanaged perceptions of a person's followers create a reality opposite to what was wanted. Perception management in leadership is very hard work, but it is worth the effort.
iii. Marketing-The best medium for businesses to affect the perceptions of the public is through marketing. To get people to buy products, marketers must create a need and manage the perception of the public so that they feel the product will fulfill that need. A good example of this is credit card companies that created the card as an alternative method of payment to cash or check and made life simpler for many people. This is not the same thing as manipulation, where businesses create something people don't need, and marketers convince them that they do need it. Good perception management benefits both the consumer and businesses.
iv. Risk Management-The decision-making process in relation to the future is an element of business that has a great effect on the company's future. If the company is too risk-averse, this leads to underperformance and missed opportunities. If the company takes too many risks, it is likely that there will be a large number of losses. Companies, therefore, need to manage perceptions appropriately in order to remain afloat.
