- Should emphasis the use of the mind/intellect. Should demonstrate competence in intellectual conceptual and theoretical aspects of his/ her profession.
- Should command a specialized body of knowledge; that may not be available to the general public.
- Technical competence –should have the ability to perform essential technical skills and tasks.
- Requires a prolonged period of professional preparation and/ or training i.e. must successfully follow
and complete a prescribed curriculum under qualified instructors and pass before being allowed to practice.
- Should allow for continuous in service growth and promotion; allow one to grow professionally. Those who have been in the field longer should be better than the new recruits. Professional growth and development should be achieved through in-service training seminars, workshops, conferences and research.
- Should be a life-long career, permanent. One should practice his/ her profession as long as one remains physically and mentally competent.
- Should be recognized in law; have legal recognition.
- Should have certificates allowing them to practice.
