• Pay package is not commensurate with work (poor remuneration).
• Very easy for non-professionals to practice (non-trained teachers – U.Ts) because it is believed that anybody can teach.
• Poor attitudes amongst the teachers about their profession.
• Low self-esteem by teachers and student teachers. Most student teachers end up in the profession as a
last resort.
• Teaching lacks a strong and purposeful professional organization. KNUT and KUPPET are more of trade unions than professional institutions (even UASU).
