Stress can be defined as the body’s reaction to internal or external stimuli in the environment that upset the body’s normal state. It can also be defined as a state we experience when there is a mismatch between perceived demands and perceived ability to cope while stress response is a set of physiological adaptations by the body to maintain homeostasis (biological balance) in the face of threat, loss or harm. Certain characteristics of a situation are associated with greater stress responses. These include the intensity or severity of the stressor and controllability of the stressor, as well as features that determine the nature of the cognitive responses or appraisals. Life event dimensions of loss, humiliation, and danger are related to the development of more adverse responses to stress.
