i) Assimilation - is the process of taking one’s environment and new information and fitting it into pre-existing cognitive schemas. It involves trying to understand something new by fitting it into what we already know. Assimilation occurs when humans are faced with new or unfamiliar information and refer to previously learned information in order to make sense of it.

ii) Accommodation is the process of taking new information in one's environment and altering pre-existing schemas in order to fit in the new information. Occurs when a person must change existing schemes to respond to a new situation. If data cannot be made to fit any existing schemes then more appropriate structures must be developed.
