- Declarative knowledge; it is the knowledge that can be declared through words and symbol systems of all kinds e.g. braille,sign language, mathematical symbols etc. it is knowing that something is the case.

- Procedural knowledge: is knowing how to do something, it is knowledge in action must be demonstrated e.g. divide fractions or when students translate a passage into a foreign language.

- Self-regulatory knowledge: it is knowing how to manage your learning, knowing how and when to use your declarative and procedural knowledge. It takes self-regulatory knowledge to know when to read every word in a text, when to skim or when to apply a strategy for overcoming procrastination, it is also called conditional knowledge. It can be specific to a subject area like when to use the formulae for calculating area not perimeter.
