It has been realized that at the secondary school level, Business Studies, as a subject,
prepares the youths for the following:-
a) Vocational training
b) Citizenship training
c) Intellectual training
d) Preparation for further studies

Vocational Training:
Evolution of various branches of Business Studies (Economics, Commerce, Accounting
and Office Practice / Organization) was necessitated by the day-to-day human
endeavors in the business world of work. Business Studies is a vocational subject
which equips the learners with the knowledge, skills and positive attitudes of the world
of business. The subject orientates learners towards self-reliance through self employment after school. It is believed that learners of Business Studies may engage in
some form of self-employment after school.
A student of Business Studies knows too well that resources are scarce and human wants are too many (unlimited), choices, therefore, must be made (giving rise to
opportunity costs) so as to provide maximum satisfaction from the available resources
(income).
A Business Studies student may budget his/her resources as well as innovates or
creates alternative ways of survival in times of financial hardships.
At all times, a student who has pursued Business Studies subject becomes conscious
of her/ his immediate economic environment and possible economic opportunities that
may benefit him/ her.
The subject matter of Business Studies may impart entrepreneurship skills and
knowledge which facilitate self-employment in business. The learner is likely to develop
desirable qualities and habits of a good entrepreneur.

Citizenship Training:
The subject matter of Business Studies trains learners to be good citizens. A student of
Business Studies is able to analyze the strengths and limitations of the country’s
economy. Since the student is equipped with the tools of economic analysis, he/she is
able to criticize constructively the economic policies of the government. A student of
Business Studies may develop positive moral values of good public conduct e.g.
avoiding corruption and embezzlement of public resources (for the public good), pay
taxes promptly and always stand for the public good of the society.
The economy of the country is always dynamic and with an economic mind, a student
of Business Studies is always equipped with tools of economic analysis in a changing
economic environment.

Intellectual Training:
The subject matter of Economics and Accounting comprises theories, principles,
concepts, laws, assumptions and generalizations which make learners’ thinking capacity to be objective, logical, creative, critical, innovative, inventive and imaginative.
Therefore, in the process of learning Business Studies, the students are able to acquire
high powers of reasoning and of imagination. This is perhaps due to the fact that
through inductive and deductive reasoning methods of inquiry, they are able to reason
logically, constructively and objectively. They are, therefore, able to solve practical
economic problems of mankind.

Preparations for Further Studies:
At the secondary school level, the subject matter of Business Studies prepares learners
for further studies in post-secondary training. Knowledge of Business Studies is also
useful to student in careers such as engineering, wildlife management and environment.
