What are the weaknesses of the present secondary school business studies syllabus in Kenya?

1. It has been observed that the syllabus coverage is too wide and detailed. Also the
teaching time appears inadequate. Four hours per week is allocated to the
subject. These four hours are not adequate to cover exhaustively the wide
syllabus
2. The syllabus appears to be a replica of the old syllabuses. There are no new
additions of the contemporary subject matter (emerging areas) such as the
Stock Exchange Market, and Business Information Technologies. These
emerging forms of knowledge should have been included in the current syllabus.
3. The serving Business Studies Teachers were trained on the considerations of the
old 7-4-2-3 Business Education curriculum which emphasized specialization in
specific areas of Business Studies (such as Accounting, Commerce, Typing,
Shorthand, Secretarial Studies, Office Practice and Economics). A number of
teachers still find challenges in teaching the new integrated syllabus. For
example, teachers of Economics may not effectively handle Accounting topics in
the integrated syllabus. The syllabus requires a review of our teacher training
programmes especially in handling Business Studies as an integrated course.
4. Economics topics still present a challenge to the secondary school learners.
This is because the subject matter of Economics appears abstract to learners of
secondary school going age. Students find it difficult to understand and
comprehend economic concepts and theories as presented in the textbooks and
also, as the content is presented by teachers.
