I. Background
Education in the US is mainly provided by the public sector.Child education is compulsory. There are also a large number of higher education institutions in the US. Public education is universally available. School curricula, funding, teaching, employment and other policies are set through locally elected school boards with jurisdiction over school districts with many directives from state legislatures. Age of compulsory education varies by state; but begins from 5 to 8 years and ends from 14 to 18 years. Compulsory education realized through public schools, state certified private school, or an approved
home school programme. Formal education in the US started in 1635.
II. Levels
- The US education system is divided into 3 levels: elementary school, middle school (at times called junior high school), and high school (at times called secondary education).
- Children are divided by age groups into grades at these levels, ranging from kindergarten (followed by first grade) for the youngest children in elementary school, up to 12th grades, the final year of high school.
- Post- secondary education, known as ‘College” in the US, is generally governed separately from the elementary and high school system.
- At the high school level, students take a broad variety of classes without special emphasis in any particular subject; Curriculum includes sciences, math, English, Social sciences and PE.
- Many states require a “health” course- where anatomy, nutrition, first aid, sexuality, drug awareness and birth control are taught.
- Electives include computers, athletics, career and technological education, performing arts, foreign languages, e.t.c.
III. Administration and Financing
- Funding is from 3 levels; local, state and federal in that order.
- The American education system comprises 12 grades of study over 12 calendar years of primary and secondary education before graduating, and often becoming eligible for admission to higher education.
