- Conflict Prevention
This is an act of avoiding conflict situations by removing its necessary conditions or early warning signs. That is, necessary efforts are made to avoid potential sources of conflict by identifying and analyzing them with a view to their early resolution and by undertaking concrete steps to avoid confrontation.
- Conflict Suppression
This is a power-based approach to ending conflict, where the more powerful (e.g. government through its security agents) use instruments of power or force to push away the issues under the carpet or impose a solution that is not sustainable and with which the parties to the conflict are not satisfied.
- Conflict Transformation
This has been defined by Lederach (1995) as those mechanisms that go beyond conflict resolution to build longer standing relationships through a process of change in perceptions and attitudes of conflicting parties.
