Faith
a. Definition

It is characterized by words such as who (used for persons), which (inanimate objects), where (places). We use definition to expand on complex subject. E.g.
Football players and weightlifters use steroids to build muscle. “steroids are synthetic substances which are designed to enhance the body’s building effects consequently improving the growth of muscle tissue”

b. Comparison and contrast
A writer gives similarities and differences between two characters. E.g
Kenya is the only country in Africa that has passed a bill to ban cutting down of trees.

c. Question and answer
Framing a question as the first sentence gives the writer an opportunity to develop an answer with specific details and evidence. E. g Does Kenya have enough forest cover? The total area of land covered by forests in Kenya is approximately 700,000 acres, which amounts to 0.01% of the total land in the country. These are worrying statistics.

d. Cause and effect
In cause and effect, we develop the reasons leading to some circumstances, or we examine the consequences. Actions are linked in terms of past, present and the way forward.
The Hubble law argues that the universe expands uniformly. This uniform expansion is caused by forces within galaxies. These forces move at speeds proportional to the distance between the galaxies, hence the uniform and centreless expansion of the universe.

e. Classification
It is characterized by grouping objects into groups or categories.

f. Discussion
In discussion, a writer presents a balanced view on a topic. You argue for or against, by the end of the discussion the writer gives his or her own point of view or opinion.

g. Descriptive
It may be in form of physical or scientific descriptions. In descriptive writing, order is very important. In scientific descriptions, order is manifested by describing a process step by step or in a sequence. E.g, how to perform a surgical operation. In physical description, we examine settings.

h. Narration/Exposition
A writer uses a plot summary to explain events. The writer should discuss the significance of the events.

i. Exemplification
It is also called illustration. It is characterized by giving examples.

j. Argumentative
In argumentative writing the writer explains the subject, analyses issues, anticipates the reader’s objections and questions and reaches a conclusion. The writer attempts to reject a general attitude about a problem and affirms a new theory. He invites the reader into an intellectual dialogue. E.g
Condemning violence in TV is a worthy argument. However, TV programs merely reflect the lifestyle found in society.
