1. Planning

This is the first stage in the writing process. It is also known as the pre-writing stage. Planning involves a series of strategies designed to acquire or formulate information and prepare to write. It involves the following;
i. Thinking about the purpose of writing
ii. Exploring the topic
iii. Gathering materials
iv. Deciding materials
v. Deciding on audience appeal
vi. Developing a strategy for organizing the writing

At the planning stage, gathering information is a very important aspect.

Sources of information

i. Primary sources-this is the firsthand, original information. This may be acquired from eyewitness, interviews, and observation or personal testimonies.
ii. Secondary sources-this is second hand information gathered from books, newspapers, journals, etc.

When people read your work they tend to ask, ‘how did you know that?’ this question is answered by the references cited at the end of your work.

The most important thing to learn about planning is to know when to stop. When you have gathered enough information and you think you cannot get any more new information, you then move to drafting.

An outline is a format and detailed plan (sketch) of a piece of communication. It is a format because it follows certain riles of layout. It is detailed because it contains all essential points made in communication. It shows at a glance all parts of a text to be written and their positions. It breaks a topic into major units and subdivide these into minor units.

-Re-examine and re-evaluate the choices they have created in their piece of writing.
-Achieve coherence and clarity by moving information from anywhere to somewhere
-Sharpen the perception of what their audience knows (what is on the page) visa vie what the audience needs to know (what is not in the page).
-Ideas of the writer and other writers are put into the best shape possible.
-Expand, delete and re-arrange information.
-Determine whether the purpose of the work controls the essay.

It involves:
-Proofreading your essay for grammar and sentence structure.
