1.Storage of Grains
-Most of grain losses are in the farm or in storage.
-Dried maize can be stored either in cobs or shelled.
-Just like all other living organisms, grain is aliving embryo and gives off water and carbon dioxide. The rate at which this take place depends on moisture content in grain, oxygen supply and environmental temperature. By adjusting temperature grains can be stored for long periods. This is done by reducing moisture content to 10-12%.
-Moisture is the most important factor that affects grain storage. This is because activities of organisms that cause damage such as pests, molds depend on moisture.
-Stored grains should be protected from rain and ground moisture. Thus storage conditions should be: Rodent proof, Insect proof and sealed tightly.

2.Storage Structures
-It can be stored in bins, silos, cribs, or in sacks or bans (normal stores at home). Sacks should be raised off the ground to allow air circulation.
-Bins or silos are made of steel or concrete. The steel ones can easily be cleaned. For large scale then concrete ones are the best.
-Most African farmers use earth bans as they are small scale farmers.
-All storage structures should be sprayed to kill insect pests.
