1. Many xerophytic features tend to be irreconcilable with high productivity. For instance reduced or highly specialized leaves or very low transpiration rate means low yields and may be inconceivable for a commercial farmer interested in maximizing his yields.
2. Breading for drought resistance as such is a long term, is complex and governed by large number of genes which is difficult to combine in a desirable way. Furthermore in sorghum, genotypic traits that govern drought resistance are not all as heritable as stomatal frequency and size and therefore are not subject to genetic manipulation.
