-Barley is an annual grass which may grow to a height of 0.5 -1 m.
-It belongs to grass family Gramminae and tribe Hordeae where the spikes have zig zag rachis.
-It tillers freely and has leaves with prominent ligules (fringe of hairs at the junction between the leaf blade and leaf sheath) and large, hairless auricles (projection of leaf base).Leaf blade is 22 -30cm long and 10-15cm wide.
-Has lateral roots which spread to 15-30cm in diameter and penetrate the soil to 90-180mm deep
-The inflorescence is a terminal cylindrical spike with 3 spikelets borne at each rachi.
--Barley is self-pollinated by wind.
The fruit is a caryopsis (Dry one seeded fruit), commonly called the 'grain' or the 'seed'.
