Diseases
Barley is susceptible to many diseases. The most common is smut. Other diseases are rust, powdery mildew, root rot, damping off
SMUT
i. Covered smut (ustilagohordai)
-In affected plants grains are replaced with a ball of black mass enclosed in a membrane sheath.
Controlled by treating seeds withorgano mercuric compounds.
ii. Loose smut
-The entire flower is replaced by mass of spores. When the mass ruptures, spores are released and carried by wind to other plants.
-Can be controlled by hot water treatment
Pests’ control
-The barley fly, Hylemiaarambourgi, dusty brown beetle, Gonocephalum simplex and black wheat beetle, Heteronychnsconsimilisoccasionally feed on and damage the stems, leaves and the growing point of barley seedlings. These pests are controlled by seed dressing with Aldrin, Dieldrin or BHC.
