-Originated in Mexico 5000BC and was distributed to other regions of the world by early Portuguese and Spanish explorers.
-Currently beans are grown worldwide in America, Africa and other parts of the world.
-The crop has been grown in Kenya in the last 300years.
-Common bean is the most successful bean in the genus phaseolus. Basically 95% of all beans grown worldwide belong to the species P. vulgaris. Total acreage on annual basis is about 28 million metric tonnes/ha with a total production of 40 million metric tonnes /year. Though it is difficult to know the acreage under beans in Kenya and other third world counties, it is perceived that the acreage fluctuates between 300,000 -500,000ha/year in Kenya.
-In production, Kenya gets about 500000mt/year (1000kg/ha)
-Beans is grown in most parts of Kenya except the coastal regions and northern rift valley (North eastern province).
