1.Beans have high protein contents with good amino acid profile since it has 3 essential amino acids needed in human diet namely lycine, tryptophene and methionine.
2.They are rich in carbohydrates, minerals (like Ca, Fe), vitamin B complex and nicotinic acids.
3.It is versatile in use. Can be used in a variety of forms e.g green or immature pods, immature seeds, leaves as vegetables, dry seeds.
4.They have ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen through symbiotic association with rhizobia bacteria in their root nodules. Because of nitrogen fixation beans are used in cereal-legume cropping systems. Note that N fixation depends on many other factors such as soil pH, history of the field, temperature, phosphorous contents in the soil. Some amounts of nitrogen fertilizer should be applied at sowing to facilitate the growth of the plant before it develops nodules for N fixation (This is called a starter nitrogen).
