1.Planning
-Planning is the process of determining the organizations goals, objectives and selecting how best to achieve them. This functions also includes considering what must be done to encourage necessary levels of change and innovation.
2.Organizing
-The process by which employees and their jobs are related to each other for accomplishing organizational objectives. Through organizing managers determine which tasks are to be done, how tasks can best be combined into specific jobs and how?
Jobs can be grouped into various units that make up the structure of the organization.
3.Directing
-The process of inducing individuals or groups to assist willingly and harmoniously in accomplishing organizational objectives.
4. Leading
-Leading includes communicating with others, helping to outline a vision of what can be accomplished, providing direction, and motivating organization members to put forth the substantial effort required.
5.Coordinating
Uniting and correlating all activities.
6.Controlling
-This is the process of ensuring efficient accomplishment of organizational objectives. It involves regulating organizational activities so that actual performance conforms to expected organizational standards and goals.
-To do the necessary regulating, managers need to monitor ongoing activities, compare the results with expected standards or progress towards goals and take corrective actions as needed.
7.Staffing
-The process of ensuring that competent employees are selected developed and rewarded for accomplishing organizational objectives.
-Though the functions of management are performed concurrently there is a logical flow of activities. An organization must first plan in order to determine its objectives. Once objectives are established, mangers design the organizations structure to meet these goals. Later they select employees to perform the required tasks.
-Managers consequently use leadership and interpersonal influence to spur employees to meet the organizational objectives.
-Finally through control, managers determine whether organizations objectives are being efficiently achieved.
8.Reporting
-Process of ensuring that those to whom the executive is responsible are informed as to what is going on.
-It includes keeping himself and his subordinates informed through records, research and inspection.
9.Budgeting
- This is concerned with the financial matters of an organization where management states in quantitative terms in a certain currency planned Organizational activities for a given time.
10.Social organizations
- Organization – According to Chester Bernard (1938) an organization is a system of consciously coordinated activities of two or more persons.
-Etzioni (1964) defines an organization as planned units, deliberately structured for the purpose of attaining specific goods and services.
-From the above definition, organizations are composed of people or groups of people who deliberately coordinate their efforts to achieve specific goals.
11.School
-The education act - defines a school as an institution in which not less than ten pupils receive regular instruction or an assembly of not less than ten pupils for the purpose of receiving regular instructions.
-From the above definitions of an organization and a school, a school can be taken to be a social organization.
-Like other social organizations a school has the same characteristics of:
i. Goal
ii. Technology
iii. Division of labour
iv. Power centers.
12.Goal
-Hoy and Miskel (1987) define a goal as defined state of affairs to be achieved. The goals of an educational organization gives it direction.
-There are two types of organizational goals namely;
i. Performance goals
ii. Organizational maintenance goals.
13. Organizational effectiveness
This is the efficiency with which a social set up achieves its goals.
