(i). Maintained Schools:-
These were government boarding schools fully maintained by the government in terms of employment of teachers and other staff.
The schools were also given grants to meet the recurrent costs of running them.
By 1986 there were 698 such schools.

(ii.) Assisted Schools:-
These were schools initially started through Harambee by the local communities in various parts of the country, particularly after independence. This was in response to a very high demand for secondary education.
The government provided assistance in the form of teachers, while the community contributed funds for purchase of supplier, sports and school physical development.
By 1986 there were 491 such schools. They consisted about 39% of the total number of secondary schools.

(iii) Unaided Harambee Schools:-
These were schools started entirely and managed by the local communities through Harambee.
In these schools communities collected funds through fees, Harambee meetings and auctions to hire teachers, support staff, buy materials and construct physical structures.
By 1986 there were 494 such schools.
(iv) Unaided Private Schools
These were privately established by entrepreneurs with an objective to make profits and provide the education services.
They were mostly concentrated in the urban areas.
The government has little to do with such schools other than ensuring that proper conduct was maintained.
Currently with the introduction of cost-sharing in all public institutions, the categorization of secondary schools changed into either public or private schools. The public schools are classified as; National, County and District Schools.
