· All alcoholic beverages: Store them always in a dark, cool place with an even temperature.
· Bottles with natural cork stoppers: Store them in a lying position so as to keep the cork moist and tight (not applicable to spirits).
· Bag-in-boxes: To be on the safe side store them lying down with the tap pointing up.
· Sparkling wine bottles: Never store a bottle of sparkling wine in a warm place. Suitable storage temperature is below 15 °C (60 °F).
Not all beverages improve with age
Most alcoholic beverages are done so that they should be drunk shortly after they have been bought; that is, they do not improve with age.
· Wine is, as a rule, at its best when drunk within 1–1½ years after it has been bought. · Fortified wines (e.g. Madeira, sherry, port), when kept in a unopened bottle, will keep from a few months to several years. In an opened bottle they will become bland in a few weeks.
· Spirits (e.g. vodka, brandy, rum, whisky) keep for years both in an unopened and an opened bottle. With time, though, the alcohol in them will loose strength and the aromas will become weaker.
· Liqueurs keep fairly well. The more alcohol and sugar they contain the better they keep. Berry and cream liqueurs are an exception: they keep only for about 12 months from the day they were purchased.
· Beer does not improve in a bottle. You can store it for a few months in a cool place, but in warm temperature they will develop a bland taste very fast.
By being cautious you can avoid an accident
· Never store a bottle of sparkling wine in a warm place. Suitable storage temperature is below 15 °C (60 °F).
· The boot of your car is not the place to store bottles containing alcoholic beverages. Especially summer heat and winter frosts can be highly damaging.
· Bottles containing alcoholic beverages should not be kept in a bookcase, on your TV set or near lamps.
· Bottles containing alcoholic beverages should not be stored near a cooker.
· Bottles containing alcoholic beverages should not be stored near objects of value
· Bottles containing alcoholic beverages should always be transported or carried in a bag or other type of packaging for maximum safety.
