Find the length of the side of the square

      

One side of a square is increased by 4 cm while the other side is reduced by 6 cm. The area of the rectangle so formed is 24 cm2. Find the length of the side of the square.

(x + 4)(x - 6) = 24
$x^2 - 2x - 48 = 0$
(x + 6)(x - 8) = 0
x = -6 or 8
x = 8
