Steps in taking MUAC
- locate the tip of the shoulder and the elbow
- Place the tape at the tip of the shoulder
- Pull the tape past the tip of the bent elbow
- Mark mid point of the upper arm at take the tape round the arm
- Correct the tape tension and take the readings two times then do the average
Sources of errors when taking MUAC
- Subject not in correct position
- When the MUAC tape is too thick, scratched or creased
- Measuring the wrong arm
- Mid arm point not correctly identified or marked
- Where the arm is not hanging loosely by the side during measurement.
