They are grouped into three:
1. According to the type of material
2. According to the function of the packaging material
3. According to the mode or style of packaging
1.Classification based on the function of the packaging material
This can be further be classified into three:
- Primary Packaging Material
- Secondary packaging material
- Tertiary packaging material
Primary Packaging Material
These are the ones in which the packaging material comes into direct contact with the
food. This type has to have extra care and precaution in selection so that it does not
impart into food or vice versa, to prevent toxins, colour, flavor, chemicals and
biochemical reactions. The package should not cause physical damage to the food e.g.
bruising of the foods with soft tissues and the ability to allow gaseous exchange or
water vapour in and out of the product.
Secondary Packaging Material
This does not come into contact with food. Its functions include:
1. Protect the primary packaging material
2. To further protect from physical damage and leakages
3. To keep off rodents, insects and dust
4. To enable easy transportation and storage
Examples includes crated and cartons
Tertiary packaging materials
It’s mainly used in loading large consignments for example loading into ships
using automated machines such as forklifts. They include drums, hard crates,
wooden pallets, metal of fibre board cases etc.
2.Classification based on mode or style of packaging
They can be further be classified into:
1. Dispensable and non-dispensable materials
2. Disposable and non-disposable materials
3. Flexible or semi-rigid or rigid materials
4. Recyclable and non-recyclable material
5. Vacuum or double seal material or ordinary packaging
3.Classification based on type of material
1. Metals and its alloys
2. Paper and films
3. Ceramics
4. Wood
5. Plastics and synthetic materials
6. Glass
