Effective marketing research involves the following steps:-
1. Definition of the problem- the research clearly defines what the problem is and show how it translates into research. This objectives affect the subsequent stages and success of the research project.
2. Research objectives:- clearly specify primary and specific objectives so as to drive the research process and provide necessary information for management decisions at the end of the process.
3) Research proposal/plan:-This involves developing the most efficient plan for gathering the needed data/information. The research plan outlines sources of existing data or background information and spells out the specific research approaches (i.e. observational, experimental or survey) contact methods, sampling plans, instruments for gathering data, data analysis techniques, level and timing of outgoing reporting, format of the report and timing and cost of the research. The research plan is prepared in a written proposal ( known as research proposal)
4. Conducting the research: Data collection/ gathering data:- starting point of any research is the search of secondary sources for the relevant information/data. If data is not available to address the existing problem, then primary research is launched.
5) Analyzing and interpreting the data or information i.e. data analysis and interpretation.
6) Research report i.e. preparing and presenting the findings in the report. The report should contain title page table of contents, preface abstract or executive summary, introduction to the study, body conclusions, accommodations and appendixes.
