Fibres are classified based on their physical properties and physiologic roles.
Components of fibre can be categorized as either soluble or insoluble fibre.

1.Soluble fibres
These fibres include pectins, gums mucilages and some hemicelluloses. They occur in
higher concentration in fruits, oats, barley, and legumes. They have the ability to hold
water and form gels therefore in the body they delay the stomach's emptying and the
transit of chyme through the intestines, delay glucose absorption and lower blood
cholesterol levels.

2.Insoluble fibres
These are found in higher concentration in vegetables, wheat and cereals. In the
body, insoluble fibres: accelerates transit of chyme through the intestines, increase
feacal weight, and slow starch breakdown and delay glucose absorption into the
blood.
In the body both soluble and insoluble fibres: influence transit time and nutrient
absorption in the gastrointestinal tract into the blood. They are also partially
fermented by microorganisms in the digestive tract to fragments that the body can use.
