1. Protein needs increase when calorie intake is inadequate since proteins will be
broken down to provide energy. Sufficient calories must be furnished to meet
energy needs so that proteins are not used for energy.
2. Protein needs also increase during periods of normal tissue growth such as
during pregnancy, lactation and infancy through adolescence. The adequate
intake set for infants through the first 6 months is 1.52g/kg of body weight,
almost double the RDA for adults.
3. Protein needs increase when the body needs to heal itself, whether from
surgery, trauma, or burns. For example people with severe burns may require
as much as 2.0g/ protein / kg of body weight.
4. Diseases of malabsorption can seriously interfere with digestion and absorption of proteins therefore increasing amount needed
