Energy Reserve
Body fat is the primary form in which energy is stored in the body. Once fat has been
formed and deposited in the adipose tissues the body has no way of excreting it.
Body fats can be reduced only by burning it as a source of energy. This use of fat
occurs only when caloric intake is less than caloric expenditure.

Insulation
Deposits of fat beneath the skin or subcutaneous fat serve as insulating material for
the body, protecting it against changes in environmental temperature.

Protection of vital body organs
Fat deposits surround certain vital organs such as kidneys and the heart. Fat holds
them in position and shield them from physical shock.

Precursors of Prostaglandins
Fats are precursors of prostaglandins, which are hormone like substances capable of
stimulating the contraction of smooth muscles in the walls of blood vessels. There are
at least 6 major forms of prostaglandins, which are synthesized from the 20-carbon
fatty acids such as arachidonic acid. They perform many important functions such as
promoting conception, inducing labour, regulating transmission of nerve impulse etc.
