Factors depressing calcium absorption in the human body

Faith
Presence of oxalic acid
Oxalic acid is found in vegetables such as spinach. It combines with calcium to form
an insoluble complex; calcium oxalate which cannot be absorbed. Most foods with
oxalic acid also contain calcium; which tie up all the oxalic acid as such eating these
foods with milk does not interfere with calcium in milk.

Presence of phytic acid
Phytic acid found in outer husk of cereals binds calcium. It affects those on calcium
poor diets but not those consuming high calcium diets.

Presence of dietary fat
High fat diets promote the formation of insoluble soaps of fatty acids and calcium.
They result in reduced calcium absorption and may lead to steatorrhea (fatty stools).

Emotional instability
Under conditions such as stress, calcium absorption is lowered and losses increased.

Increased gastric motility
Anything which increases the passage of food through the gastro intestinal tract
decreases calcium absorption. Laxatives (substance given to aid faster movement of
stool) and foods high in bulk may also affect.

Lack of exercise
Bed ridden and sedentary persons absorb less calcium and lose more calcium than
those engaged in exercise. Lack of weight on the bones leads to this factor. Swimmers
do not benefit as much as joggers. Astronauts experience calcium imbalance due to
weightlessness and immobility.
