Faith
1. It maintains water and osmotic pressure balance together with sodium.
2. It maintains acid base balance together with phosphate and sulphate. Chloride
ions easily pass out of red blood cells into the blood plasma to help the blood
carry large amounts of carbon dioxide to the lungs. As carbon dioxide is taken
up and released from the blood, chloride shifts in and out of plasma to
counteract any change in the acid-base balance that might otherwise occur. This
transfer of chloride in and out of the red blood cells is called chloride shift.
